About Julie
Hello! I'm Julie, the maker behind Wools by Jools. I create needle felt characters, animals, and decorative pieces from my home studio in Little Haywood, a lovely village in the heart of Staffordshire.
Needle felting is the art of shaping wool with a barbed needle, building up layers of colour and detail to create three-dimensional sculptures. There's no glue, no stitching — just wool, a needle, and a lot of patience. I find the whole process incredibly relaxing and rewarding, watching a handful of loose fibres slowly take shape into a recognisable character.
I'm especially drawn to creating pet portraits and British wildlife. There's something magical about capturing the personality of a beloved dog or cat in wool, right down to the tilt of their head or the markings on their fur. Many of my animal pieces sit on natural wood slice bases, which adds a lovely rustic touch.
What I Love Making
My work ranges from detailed pet portraits to whimsical fairy cottages, delicate felt flowers on embroidery hoops, and sweet characters. I also paint watercolours on commission. Each piece has a nostalgic, handcrafted charm — the kind of thing that makes people smile when they see it.
Popular pieces include custom dog and cat portraits (perfect as gifts or memorial keepsakes), woodland creatures like foxes, squirrels, and owls, felt flower hoops, and bespoke people — couples, families, even groups with their pets.
Craft Shows
I regularly attend local craft fairs and markets across Staffordshire, where you can see my work in person and chat about commissions. There's nothing quite like holding a piece of needle felting to appreciate the texture and detail. Keep an eye on my Instagram for upcoming show dates.
